Colonel Marius ChataignonMsgr. Marius S. Chataignon was born in Cellieu, Loire, France on September 17, 1886. He served in the French Army before coming to the United States to study for the priesthood in 1907. He graduated from St. Mary’s seminary in 1911 and was ordained on December 24, 1911. His first appointment was to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Galveston as assistant pastor.

On July 4, 1917, Father Chataignon was appointed as Chaplain in the United States Army. He participated in the Menuse Argonne and Champaign battles. He served with the 141st Infantry, the 36th Division Headquarters, and the 78th Field Artillery Sixth Division. He was honorably discharged on July 24, 1919 at Camp Travis, Texas as first Lieutenant, Chaplain.

On August 23, 1919,  the Argon Maco Stewart Post no. 20 of the American Legion was chartered. Father Chataignon was a charter member of this post and served as its chaplain throughout his years.

On June 7, 1923, Father Chataignon was appointed chaplain in the Officer’s Reserve Corps. From April 2, 1923 to February 12, 1931 he was a major in the Texas National Guard 36th Division, Division Headquarters, as Division Chaplain, under General Hulen. On April 27, 1931 he was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel.
